Project B03 asks how gases and isotopes reflect environmental conditions and the functional biodiversity of the subsurface Critical Zone. We develop new technologies for making high-frequency multi-gas and isotope measurements using Raman spectroscopy and apply simultaneous multi-gas measurements in the field and in laboratory settings to link gas fluxes to microbial metabolisms. We develop and apply novel radiocarbon methods to determine rates of biogeochemical transformations and trace flows of subsurface carbon.
