Project B01 will disentangle variations among and within different types of forest stands that relate the fluxes in water, organic matter, and nutrients at the Critical Zone surface to the taxonomic and functional diversity of the vegetation. Natural spatio-temporal gradients of forest structure will be used to study the relationships between phenological and structural aspects of tree canopies, understory vegetation, and root biomass in a response-effect-trait framework. Results from limestone (Hainich CZE) and sandstone (SESO) settings will be compared for synthesis.
